Music Lessons

At Maeroa Intermediate, students have the opportunity to take part in low-cost, subsidised music lessons that make learning an instrument accessible to all. Lessons are predominantly held during school hours and cover Guitar, Drumming, Strings, and Rock Band.

Because places are in high demand, sign-ups occur during the first week of school, and spaces often fill up quickly. Students who are accepted into lessons are expected to show commitment by practising regularly, coming prepared, and giving their best effort. Progress across the year depends on this dedication, and inclusion in the programme is reviewed on a term-by-term basis.

Music lessons not only develop technical skills but also cultivate creativity, confidence, and teamwork. Whether performing as part of a band or learning individually, students gain valuable experiences that enrich their school life. Music is an exciting and rewarding part of our curriculum, and we are proud to offer these opportunities.

Performance

At Maeroa Intermediate, students are encouraged to explore and showcase their talents through a wide range of performance opportunities. Our biannual school production is a highlight, bringing together acting, singing, dance, and stagecraft. Students can also join cultural performance groups, debate, theatre sports, and public speaking, building confidence and teamwork while developing new skills.

Beyond the school, there are opportunities to represent Maeroa in regional competitions, including ShowQuest, dance events, and debating tournaments. Closer to home, Maeroa Got Talent provides a platform for students to share their creativity in front of their peers.

These experiences allow students to try something new or build on existing talents, encouraging personal growth, resilience, and pride in performance. At Maeroa, we celebrate creativity and the courage to step into the spotlight.

Cultural Performing Arts

Kapa Haka

At Maeroa, our Kapa Haka group offers students the chance to celebrate and express te ao Māori through waiata, haka, and performance. Being part of the rōpū builds confidence, teamwork, and pride in culture, while also providing opportunities to perform at school events and in the wider community. Students develop their skills in voice, movement, and leadership, and strengthen their sense of identity and belonging as they represent Maeroa with mana.

Pasifika

At Maeroa, our Pasifika group is a place where students from all Pacific nations can come together to celebrate and share their culture. Being part of the group builds a strong sense of identity and belonging, while also creating opportunities to make friendships and connect with others across the Pacific community. Students develop confidence through performance, leadership, and teamwork, and gain pride in representing their heritage at school and community events. It’s a space to celebrate who you are, learn from each other, and showcase the richness of Pasifika culture at Maeroa.
