Building Belonging and Growing New Interests
At Maeroa Intermediate, learning doesn’t stop when the bell rings. We believe that school should be a place where every student feels a sense of belonging and has opportunities to discover who they are and what they love to do. For our emerging adolescents, these experiences are vital. They help students form positive connections, build confidence, and develop the skills and attitudes that will serve them well throughout life.
Our students can participate in a wide range of activities designed to spark curiosity, foster teamwork, and develop leadership skills. These include:
- Sporting opportunities through WIMS competitions, AIMS Games, and school teams across many codes
- Cultural groups such as Kapa Haka, Pasifika.
- Creative arts, including Art, Drama, Dance, and Music performances
- Leadership roles such as Librarians, class councillors and Leo Club members
- Academic and enrichment groups, including Chess Club, Science and Technology challenges, and academic competitions.
- Environmental initiatives through our gardening group, Enviro Group and gully restoration projects
- Talent Time, where students can explore new interests and develop practical skills
- Community service through our Leo Club, helping around the school, and supporting others
Participation in these activities provides students with an opportunity to try new things, build friendships across classes and year levels, and develop a sense of pride in their school. It’s through these experiences that many students find their place — discovering talents, interests, and values that shape who they will become.
At Maeroa Intermediate, we recognise that when students feel connected and involved, they achieve their full potential. Every activity, whether on the sports field, developing new interests, or serving others, helps our students embody our school values of Maanakitanga, Maanawanui, and Whakamiha — to show care and respect, to persevere, and to take pride in all they do.
